Social Media Summit is a joint initiative of Progressive Youth Forum (PYF) and Pakistan-US Alumni Network (PUAN).
Social media is turning into a tool for social activism in Pakistan. The digital realm allows us all to have opinions and express them simultaneously, regardless of how flawed and inaccurate they are. Whenever injustice takes place in any part of the country, our social media activists come in action by raising the issue. But there’s still a huge gap between intent and action, and it will take several years for the social media scene in Pakistan to mature enough to have a tangible effect on governance and policy. Still, learning, observing and experimenting without fear is the most intelligent approach to understanding what the social media can and can’t do for us.
In order to bring this debate on big canvas IVLP alums who went to US on the theme of “Social Media Activism” where they visited various US based social media firms to learn the best practices. They felt it deem necessary to share their learnings with their country fellows. In this regard, they decided to organize a Social Media Summit-2014 in Islamabad. This project focuses on organizing 2-Day Summit on Social Media in Pakistan for College/University students, journalists, bloggers, social media gurus, civil society activists, social entrepreneurs and alums. The summit is designed to enable participants to improve their online- communication skills, express their opinions on different forums, create awareness about important issues, etc. The sessions will be conducted by Progressive Youth Forum (PYF) and Alumni who are well-versed in the mentioned fields and who will share their knowledge and experiences from the Social Media Summit.
The summit will bring more than 300 participants, speakers, experts and social media gurus to discuss the emerging trends of social media in Pakistan, how it is influencing new generation and all aspects of lifecycle and how social media tools could be used to empower at large and various issues and causes in particular.
The summit is also unique as some of the key speakers and experts from South Asia region and United States of America will also be taken online to discuss the situation of social media in their countries respectively.
